The main purpose of this process art project was to inspire others through methods of music and inspiration, and how the two can intertwine to complement one another in the most harmonious of ways. This projects intent was to also establish and replenish one’s own creativity.

Five identical packages containing a single CD and a piece of white paper were placed throughout the city in hopes of someone finding them, taking them, and following the instructions contained within each package.

The Instructions asked each person to listen to the CD and express how it made them feel on the white piece of paper provided. They were then asked to bring their expressive pieces of work to the Wired Monk on Thursday October 9th at 6:00 PM.

Together these five potential forms of expression would come together to create a greater and more significant piece of art. This, of course, would have been the ideal outcome for this project.

As the rules instructed I was at the Wired Monk at 6:00 PM, a bamboo stick by my side as the instruction stated to signify myself as the one responsible for distributing the packages. Minutes went by, lots and lots of minutes, and I had been approached by no one. It seemed as though my packages were not received by anyone, or at least not by anyone who was willing to follow through with all that I asked of them. That is until a person, who later introduced themselves as Andrew, sat down across from me at the Wired Monk and asked if I was the one who was responsible for the package he found in the vending machine when purchasing a candy bar, which had apparently upset his stomach.

Of course I said I was the one responsible for the package he found, and I asked him if he had listened to the CD. He had. Not only that but he had also created a piece of artwork as I had asked him to do. Andrew said that he found a lot of the songs dark and mellow, but also very hopeful, looking positively into the future. He used gouache, charcol, and watercolour to represent a lifeless woods sleeping in the winter’s cold. What’s warming about this picture is the bright and vibrant sunset (or sunrise) featured. The fullness of the sky and how it beams and reflects off the snow fully expresses Andrew’s idea of overcoming a dark period in one’s life and advancing towards a brighter, more promising future.

My own observations on the outcome of this project is more so a socialists interpretation. We, as humans, tend to long for something different, yet when exposed to such an opportunity many of us tend to retreat to our everyday routines that we so often complain about. It takes a certain kind of person to step out of their comfort zone, to explore the unknown and ask them selves “what if?” Andrew asked himself that question. Whether or not he achieved the answer he was looking for, I cannot say, but I can say that he’s no worse off than he was before. So maybe we should follow in Andrew’s footsteps and be a little more daring, a little more spontaneous and really, a little more alive.

An assignment done in intro to studio practice. We were to paint a still life under an orange light that removed the hues from the colours in the room, leaving everything looking like shades of brown, including the still life and paints. All of our paintings looked like sepia toned paintings when we were done, but when the regular lights were turned back on, we were surprised to see that our paintings actually looked like whats posted above.

Obviously there is a story behind “The Killer Chipmunk” and here it is:
I was about three or four years old at the time and my mother and I were going for an afternoon drive in Barrachois after having dropped my sister, Tiffany, off at her friends birthday party near the shore. I suppose it was a cloudy overcast day since I do remember there being some rain showers. As it was my mother took me on a walk through the forest and after following a small path through the trees we reached a small brook. In the brook were many beaver dams, and also many beavers. Stretching over the water was a small concrete bridge connecting the two banks so that hikers could pass over the water without getting wet. My mom and I stopped to watch the beavers and sat down on the bridge, dangling our feet over the edge, several feet up from the shallow waters. We sat there for a few minutes and that’s when the killer chipmunk attacked.

I suppose that a lot of hikers would stop at the bridge for lunch or a snack, and intern would leave crumbs and portions of their food for the small animals, like this chipmunk, because it was obviously very used to humans. There was a small bush by the bridge, from which the chipmunk emerged. He looked at us and we looked at him. Occasionally he would move towards us, to which I’d react to by moving further away. Needless to say I was terrified of the little creature and nearly jumped into the water just to avoid the possibility of it attacking me. However, before the chipmunk had its chance to attack it began to rain and my mom and I bolted back to the car, just barely escaping from the chipmunk’s deadly grasp.

Of course the “killer” in the killer chipmunk is just a facade my mother put on the chipmunk when retelling the story to others because of my undeniable fear of it. My mom claims it’s one of her favorite memories, and it is also one of my favorite memories, too. In fact, I was so young that I think that my own memories of that day are more so my mother’s.

This was my submission to the Fine Arts Fair back in the spring of 2005. I was in grade nine at the time and was obsessed with The Phantom of the Opera; an obsession that has never really died.

Each ink painting on the display board represents the main songs of the musical, and the song book contains all of those songs which I had personally written out and stained by hand. The project was a tedious task and took well over two months to complete. I was actually disappointed when I couldn’t think of anything else to add to it.

Music is an important part of my life and I’ve been playing the Tenor saxophone in the school bands for eight years now. The band program has had a profound impact on my life and without it I don’t think I would be the same person that I am today. I really couldn’t think of a better way to present myself through combining my love of art and music.

This piece was inspired by Andy Warhol. I thought about Andy Warhol, his techniques, and what or who he might paint if he were alive today. Seeing as Andy Warhol was very much into the underground scene as well as pop culture, I figured he might paint the aptly named “Queen of Indie”, Parker Posey. I studied Warhol’s work and tried to mimic his printmaking technique by hand, as well as his eccentric use of colours.

Here I decided to take on the concept of love within music, explaining it both verbally and non-verbally. Like the pervious two projects, music has been fused with art but this time love is thrown into the mix. Although love generally complicates things, I believe the message here is conclusive: Music is everywhere, love is in music, and therefore love is everywhere even in the most insignificant and sometimes the most unpleasant moments.

Love within Music

The littlest birds sing as the woodpeckers peck within a doddering oak tree. There is music.

The cat as it graciously purrs against your ear after a hefty meal. There is music.

The dog as it barks upon insinuation. There is music.

The slapping jaws over a well-prepared meal. There is music.

The haggard cough caused by fifteen cigarettes. There is music.

The humming of the dryer as it runs throughout the night. There is music.

The laughter of an infant after his nose has been snatched. There is music.

The crunching of snow beneath a pair of wearied boots. There is music.

The scrape of a pencil as it glides across your paper. There is music.

The sobs surrounding you after a loved one dies. There is music.

The time you spend alone when you hear nothing at all. There is music.

When she rests her head upon your back to listen to the beating of your heart, there is music.

After reading the story of the Saladin I was inspired to create a painting depicting Captain Alexander MacKenzie. Although not much is known about him, it is understood that he was an unpleasant man, which was an attribute I tried to strongly portray in my painting. The red nose and cheeks alludes to MacKenzie’s constant drinking, but also to the harsh sea that he has had to endure for so many years. This piece could show Captain MacKenzie as he was when he was alive, but perhaps even more so as a restless spirit.

The medium used on this piece was watercolour, but if you look closely you can see that sea salt is apparent on each strand of seaweed that hangs off the head and intertwines within the beard of Captain Alexander.

Alexander MacKenzie was the hot tempered captain of the Saladin
which was a British barque. The Saladin took a voyage in February of 1844, but
was found stranded later that year in May near Country Harbour, Nova
Scotia.

A smuggler named George Fielding was a man sailing the ship. Onboard the Saladin
was a lot of valuable cargo, and Fielding approached many members of the crew in
secret, successfully forming a mutiny against Captain Alexander. First, the crew
killed Mackenzie’s first mate and the ship’s carpenter with an axe. MacKenzie
was the next to be murdered when the crew called “man overboard” to trick him
into coming on deck. Two other crew members were killed afterward when paranoia
began to set in amongst the mutineers. Shortly after, suspecting that George
Fielding may try to kill them and take the cargo for himself, the crew attacked
him, throwing him and his twelve year old son, George Fielding Jr., overboard
and into the rough Atlantic waters. This left only 6 men alive on the Saladin.

After the ship was found the crew was rounded up, charged with piracy and murder
and then taken to Halifax to be put on trial. Four of the six men were charged
for all the murders as well as mutiny. The four mutineers were hanged in
Halifax on July 30th, 1844.

“The chicken contributes, but the pig is dedicated.” This is a saying often used in reference to breakfast. The chicken contributes to the meal by laying an egg, but the pig is dedicated because he is the bacon. I chose to play around with this old saying and did so by depicting it in a different manner. In this case we have a fisherman and a baited worm. The fisherman contributes, as he physically ventures out to catch the fish, but the worm is dedicated as he sacrifices himself fully to lure the fish in. Without the worm there would be nothing to attract the fish, so even though the fisherman gets the credit for catching the fish, the glory rightfully belongs to the worm.

This painting may also present the viewer with a new appreciation for the lesser valued creatures as he or she is forced to acknowledge and possibly appreciate their importance.

Through this watercolour I chose to play around with perspective. Fishing is a widespread activity and is one that is commonly captured through an artist’s hand, although not especially in such an atypical manner. At first glance it may seem as though the world’s largest worm is baited on the world’s largest hook. This is not the case, however, because upon further examination it is realized that the worm and hook are not monstrous in size but are closest to the viewer as the fisherman is in the process of casting his homemade rod.

I presented myself with the task of tackling a chunk of clay and turning it into something both functional and decorative. This was one of my first serious experiences with clay, and although the result was not exactly what I had imagined, I’m quite satisfied with it. There is a space in the trumpeter’s back that is used for holding paintbrushes. The bell of the trumpet itself is drawn out into unrealistic proportions and expands upright, becoming a water dish for cleaning the paintbrushes. I combined my two passions: music and art.

This watercolour that I painted is of my grandfather, Lauchie MacIntosh, and was given to him as a Christmas present back in 2006. My poppy always said he wanted to go to college, and I sent him to college last spring when this painting became one of my submissions in the Senior Art Investigation exhibit at Cape Breton University.

Every Canada Day my grandfather would dress from head to toe in reds, whites, and an abundance of maple leafs. He did this every year for as long as I can remember and was quickly dubbed “Captain Canada” by everyone in town.

Welcome to my most righteous “blog”—though it’s not so much a blog as it is more a showcase of my artwork.

My name is Tyler Hyde and I’m eighteen years old and will attending NSCAD University very shortly in hopes of obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts. After that I have plans to possibly continue with my studies and obtain my Bachelor of Education in order to become an art teacher, but we’ll see which way the wind blows me. Art has always been my passion and is something I find to be both rewarding and therapeutic.

I also want to live in the Swiss Alps.
